In 1978 there was a fatal car accident involving three young women. The car they were driving was a Ford Pinto, They were rear-ended resulting in a fiery accident that cost them their lives. The driver of the vehicle was 18-year-old Judy Ulrich, and the two passengers were 16-year-old Lyn Ulrich and 18-year-old Donna May Ulrich. this fiery ending was due to an issue with the fuel system in more than one car produced by Ford. These vehicles were in a voluntary recall. Due to the issues with the design of the car, Ford was indicted on three counts of reckless homicide.
There were 217,763 Ford Pintos sold in 1973 they were actually the highest selling station wagon at the time. Ford made millions off this product and refused to do a mandatory recall because the cost would be too great. Infact they knew of this dangerous fault in the car since 1970 when rushed production meant cuts in safety and development. Fords greedyness and careless acts costed these three women their lives.
